Deposit bonus: how to work out what it really costs
The deposit bonus is the most widespread mechanic in the industry and at the same time the least well understood. “100% on your first deposit” reads as doubling your money, although in reality it is a conditional credit that the operator extends in exchange for a commitment to play for a certain time. The difference between those two readings is measured in actual hryvnia, and that is exactly what we are going to calculate here.
This material applies to any deposit, the first as well as the tenth. If you are specifically interested in a multi-part starter offer, there is a separate analysis of the welcome package for that; here we are talking about the mechanic itself.
What an offer consists of
Percentage and cap
The two figures work as a pair, and the second one matters more. The wording “100% up to 10,000 hryvnia” means that doubling applies only up to a deposit of 10,000: put in 15,000 and you get the same 10,000 of bonus, which is already 67%, not 100%.
From this comes the first practical rule: the optimal deposit for such a bonus equals the cap. Less and you are leaving value on the table; more and the percentage gets diluted.
Minimum deposit
Every promotion has a lower threshold. Deposit less and the bonus is not credited at all, and fixing that retroactively is usually impossible. Look for the threshold not on the banner but in the rules of the specific promotion: the front page often says “from 100 hryvnia”, while the terms turn out to require 500 or more for the free spins in the package.
Wager
A multiplier showing how much turnover in bets you have to generate before the bonus funds become withdrawable. There is a nuance here that costs people money: the wager may be calculated from the bonus amount, or from “deposit plus bonus”.
Work out the difference on a 3,000 hryvnia deposit with a 100% bonus and a x35 wager:
- from the bonus: 3,000 × 35 = 105,000 hryvnia of turnover;
- from deposit plus bonus: 6,000 × 35 = 210,000 hryvnia of turnover.
The same “x35” on the banner means commitments that differ twofold. This is the first thing to look for in the rules.
Bet limit while a bonus is active
This is usually a small amount, in Ukrainian hryvnia most often somewhere between 50 and 200 per spin. A single bet above the limit voids the bonus along with everything you won with it, and the system records this automatically. Appeals get nowhere: the condition was in the rules.
This is the most common reason for losing a bonus, more common than running out of time. The limit is especially easy to breach if you play a slot with a bonus-buy feature: such a purchase is often counted as one large bet.
Game contribution and time limit
Slots usually count 100%, roulette and blackjack 5–10% or not at all, and live tables are often excluded entirely. The wagering period ranges from a few days to a month; any unwagered remainder expires along with the winnings from it.
The arithmetic: what “100% up to 10,000” actually costs
Take a realistic scenario. A deposit of 10,000 hryvnia, a bonus of 10,000, a x35 wager on the bonus amount, so 350,000 hryvnia of turnover. You play a slot with 96% RTP.
The expected loss on that turnover: 350,000 × 4% = 14,000 hryvnia. In other words, to “claim” a 10,000 bonus you will statistically have to hand the casino 14,000. That does not mean you are certain to lose: variance over short distances is enormous, and some players will come out ahead. But the average result is negative, and that is precisely why the operator makes the offer.
The conclusion from this arithmetic is not “never take bonuses” but something more precise: a bonus does not create profit, it extends your playing time for the same money. If you came for entertainment, it is a fair deal. If you came to earn, the deal is against you.
When a bonus really is worth it
- A wager of x20 or lower with 100% slot contribution: such offers do exist and are mathematically far softer.
- The wager is calculated from the bonus only, not from the bonus plus deposit.
- A period of two weeks or more: you are not forced to play in a rush.
- A bet limit that your usual playing style already fits within.
- There is no cap on withdrawing bonus winnings, or the cap is high.
Reload bonuses: offers for subsequent deposits
After the starter package, operators move on to regular promotions, the “reloads”. The format is the same but the percentages are lower: 25–50% instead of 100%, often tied to a day of the week or to participation in the loyalty programme.
The paradox is that a reload is often better value than a welcome bonus: the percentage is smaller, but the wager is softer and the cap is closer to the real deposit size of an ordinary player. What you should compare is not the percentages but the final turnover in hryvnia required of you.
The Ukrainian context: three things that are not in the promotion rules
A deposit bonus is legal, a free one is not
The April 2025 rule prohibited operators from issuing bonuses without a contribution from the player: no-deposit credits, spins for registration, gifts for verification. A deposit bonus does not fall under that ban because it is tied to your deposit, so licensed operators holding a PlayCity permit offer it without any issue.
Spending limits restrict the deposit itself
Mandatory limits apply on the legal market: spending on gambling may not exceed 15% of declared average monthly income per day, 25% per week and 40% per month. So an offer of “100% up to 50,000” is purely theoretical for most players, as depositing that amount simply will not be possible. Financial limits may be changed once a month.
The 23% tax is calculated on winnings, not on your net result
Winnings are taxed at a combined rate of 23% (18% personal income tax plus a 5% military levy), and a licensed operator withholds it as a tax agent. Losses do not reduce the taxable base. For bonus maths this means you have to add a tax layer to any expected-value calculation, and an offer that looks positive on paper often stops being positive after it.
Common mistakes
- Depositing more than the bonus cap. The excess is not doubled, but it is fully subject to the wager if the wager is calculated from deposit plus bonus.
- Activating a bonus when you plan to play for half an hour. Until the wager is met, your own money is also locked and cannot be withdrawn.
- Playing your favourite blackjack with an active bonus. A 5% contribution means you will have to generate twenty times the turnover.
- Raising your bet near the end of wagering to finish in time. That is the most direct route to cancellation.
- Taking a bonus at an illegal site for “more generous” terms. The wager there is the same, but there is no tax agent, no register and no complaint mechanism.
When playing without a bonus makes more sense
Turning down a bonus is not a mistake or a “wasted opportunity”. Your own money is not bound by a wager, you can withdraw it at any moment, no bet limit applies to it, and you do not have to keep track of which games count.
This is the better option if you: play rarely and in short sessions; want to try a specific slot with a bonus buy; plan to withdraw your winnings straight away rather than keep playing; or simply are not prepared to keep five conditions in mind for two weeks.
The key points in brief
A deposit bonus is not a doubling of your money but an exchange: the operator gives you a bigger balance and in return you commit to generating a certain turnover. The price of the deal is measured by the expected loss on that turnover, and it is usually higher than the face value of the bonus.
Before activating, find four things: what the wager is calculated from, what the bonus cap is, what the bet limit is and how much time you are given. If you do not like even one of the answers, play with your own money, which is a perfectly normal choice. And for Ukraine add two more filters: spending limits that restrict the deposit itself, and the 23% tax withheld from winnings regardless of whether they came from a bonus or not.
