Free gaming bonuses: a full list of mechanics and where the line is now drawn

“Free bonus” is a far broader category than no-deposit credits, and it is easy to get lost in it. The phrase covers at least six different mechanics that look different but, legally speaking, have ended up on the same side of the line in Ukraine. And one more thing that everyone considers a bonus is in fact not one, and that is precisely the thing that remained available.

Let us go through the category in full: what belongs where, where the line runs and what follows from it when choosing a site.

Taxonomy: six mechanics called free

Credit for registration

Bonus funds or spins that appear in the account right after the profile is created. This is the best-known form, and it is covered in a separate breakdown of no-deposit bonuses.

A gift for verification

A separate mechanic: the bonus is granted not for registering but for uploading documents. The benefit for the operator is twofold — attract the player and complete KYC immediately, cutting verification costs at the moment of the first payout.

Wheel of fortune and similar draws

A daily free spin of the wheel with prizes ranging from bonus hryvnia to free spins. The mechanic is built to form the habit of visiting the site every day — the prize pool is secondary here, the regularity of visits is what really counts.

Free bets

A bet at the operator’s expense where, if it wins, the player receives only the net profit without the stake being returned. The format came from sports betting, but it also shows up in casinos.

Bonus for subscribing or installing the app

Credit for an action unrelated to money: subscribing to a channel, installing the mobile app, filling in the profile completely, confirming a phone number.

Free entry to a tournament with a cash prize pool

The so-called freeroll: entry without a stake, with real prizes. It looks the most harmless item on the whole list, but by the criterion set out in the law it is no different from the rest.

Where the line runs in Ukrainian law

There is a single criterion separating what is allowed from what is banned, and it is simple: is there a contribution from the player.

The rule that took effect in April 2025 prohibits operators from giving players incentives that require no payment on their part. All six mechanics above fall under this ban — regardless of how they are packaged or how modest the prize pool is.

On the other side of the line is everything tied to the player’s money: a deposit bonus, cashback on losses, tournaments with paid entry, loyalty tiers earned through real turnover. These mechanics are legal, and licensed operators holding a PlayCity permit do offer them.

The ban sits alongside other restrictions adopted the same year: a substantial limitation of gambling advertising, mandatory spending and time limits, and player identification via Diia or BankID before the first bet. This is a single package of measures with a single logic — to reduce the number of people who start playing without a considered decision of their own.

The only thing that is genuinely still free

Demo mode. And it escaped the ban on a formal ground: it is not an incentive. Demo runs on virtual chips, gives neither a win nor any way to withdraw one, so legally it does not amount to providing funds to the player.

In practice it is the most useful free tool on the whole list, though also the least advertised — there is nothing in it for the operator to earn. What it gives you:

  • a look at the mechanics of a specific slot: how often bonus rounds trigger, how the multipliers work, how long a “silent” streak lasts;
  • a feel for volatility in practice rather than from the description on the game card;
  • a comparison of several games before choosing what to play for real money;
  • a check of whether you actually enjoy a particular format — often it turns out you don’t.

One caveat: demo does not predict results of play for real money. The random number generator is the same, but a run of lucky spins in demo mode is just a run of lucky spins, not a sign of a “hot” slot. Slots have no such property.

What to do when you see a free bonus on a site

Treat it as information about the site itself, not about the offer.

A licensed Ukrainian operator cannot offer you a wheel of fortune, a gift for verification or a freeroll with a cash prize. Sanctions for that go as far as revocation of the licence, so nobody will risk it for the sake of a marketing campaign. Which means the presence of such a banner tells you exactly one thing: the site operates outside the Ukrainian legal framework.

From there comes the standard set of consequences: the operator is not in the state register; there is nowhere to complain to the regulator if you are not paid; the domain is subject to blocking, hence the mirrors and phishing copies; there is no hryvnia at the cashier, so conversion applies to every transaction; Ukrainian banks do not process gambling transactions to such sites; there is no tax agent, so you will have to declare the 23% on your winnings yourself; and state self-restriction through the register of persons with restricted access does not apply.

Why free bonuses were never free

It is worth breaking down the economics of the mechanic so you don’t mourn a lost opportunity.

Any no-cost credit came with a set of conditions that made it profitable for the operator: a raised wager, often twice as high as on deposit bonuses; a withdrawal cap at a fixed amount regardless of the win; a requirement to make a deposit before payout “to confirm the payment method”; a short validity period; a tie to one specific slot.

Put that together and the expected value of the offer to the player comes out at a few dozen hryvnia. The operator’s cost, meanwhile, was recouped by the first deposit the offer was meant to trigger. It was a line in the marketing budget, not a gift, and it was counted as the cost of acquiring a customer.

A separate word on search results

Queries about free bonuses are arguably the most polluted corner of the topic. Legal operators cannot compete for them in principle, so the space is taken by illegal sites and the sites that funnel traffic to them.

Two schemes come up most often. The first is phishing copies: the promise of a free bonus is used as bait on a fake “mirror”, and the goal is to harvest logins and payment details. The second is pages with codes that don’t work: the code turns out to be invalid, but you have already registered and left your data.

The working rule here is simple: don’t take the link to a site from an ad block or a random messenger channel.

The key points in brief

Free gaming bonuses are six different mechanics with one feature in common: they require no contribution from the player. That is exactly the criterion on which Ukrainian law banned them in April 2025, along with no-deposit credits and spins for registration.

In their place, the legal segment runs bonuses tied to the player’s money: deposits, cashback, tournaments with paid entry, loyalty programmes. And the one genuinely free thing — demo mode on slots — has not gone anywhere, because it was never a bonus.

The most practical conclusion: a banner with a free bonus works as an indicator today. It tells you nothing useful about the operator’s generosity, but it tells you unambiguously about its legal status.
