Main Football Betting Markets

Bookmakers offer dozens of betting options on every football match. Settlement rules vary between bookmakers, so read the rules section on the operator's site before placing a bet.

Match Result (1X2)

The most common market: you need to predict the result of regular time — home win (1), draw (X), or away win (2). Extra time and penalty shootouts are not counted unless stated otherwise in the rules.

Double Chance

A bet on two outcomes out of three: 1X (home win or draw), 12 (either team wins), or X2 (draw or away win). The odds are lower than on a single outcome, but the probability of winning is higher.

Handicap

The bookmaker gives one team a virtual advantage or deficit. For example, a −1.5 handicap on the home team means the bet wins only if the team wins by two goals or more. A +1.5 handicap on the away team wins if they win, draw, or lose by one goal. Asian handicaps (quarter and half lines) can return part of the stake — rules depend on the bookmaker.

Totals

A bet on the total number of goals scored by both teams. Over 2.5 wins if three or more goals are scored in the match; under 2.5 wins if two or fewer goals are scored. Totals can be individual (one team's goals) or by half.

Both Teams to Score

A bet on whether each team will score at least one goal. "Yes" wins with scores like 1:1, 2:1, 3:2 and similar; "No" wins if at least one team fails to score.

Correct Score

You need to predict the exact final score. Odds are high, but the probability of guessing correctly is low. Only regular time counts unless stated otherwise in the rules.

Corners and Cards

Bets on match statistics: total corners (over/under a certain number), which team will have more corners, total yellow and red cards. Check the bookmaker's rules for counting methods (whether a red card counts, how a second yellow card is counted).

Outright Bets

Bets on the tournament winner, season top scorer, team advancing from the group, league position. The result is determined after the tournament or season ends, and funds are locked for the entire period.

How to Read Odds

Most bookmakers in Ukraine use decimal (European) odds format. The odds show how much you'll receive for each hryvnia staked if you win. For example, a 100 hryvnia bet at 2.50 odds will return 250 hryvnias (including your stake); net profit is 150 hryvnias.

Odds also indicate the bookmaker's assessment of event probability. Formula: probability = 1 / odds × 100%. For example, 2.00 odds correspond to 50% probability, 3.00 odds to roughly 33%.

Bookmaker Margin

The bookmaker builds their own margin into the odds — the difference between true probability and the offered odds. To see the margin, add the reciprocals of all odds for outcomes of a single event and subtract one. For example, if match result odds are 2.10 (W1), 3.40 (X), and 3.60 (W2), the sum of reciprocals is 1/2.10 + 1/3.40 + 1/3.60 ≈ 1.053. The margin is about 5.3%. The lower the margin, the better the odds for the player.

Pre-match and Live

Pre-match means bets placed before the match starts. The line is formed in advance, odds are stable, and you have time to study statistics and news. Most outright and exotic markets are only available pre-match.

Live (in-play betting) — the bookmaker accepts bets during the match. Odds change every few seconds depending on the score, time, dangerous moments, and possession. Live betting requires quick reactions and understanding of the game; broadcast delay can lead to bets being accepted at outdated odds or rejected.

What Affects the Line

Bookmakers set odds based on numerous factors. Understanding these factors helps assess how well the offered line matches the real situation.

Lineups and Injuries

The absence of a key player — defender, midfielder, or striker — can significantly change a team's chances. Bookmakers adjust odds after starting lineups are published, but sometimes lag behind. Follow club news.

Motivation and Tournament Situation

A team that needs a win to advance to the playoffs or avoid relegation plays more aggressively than a team that has already achieved its goals. Late in the season, unexpected results are possible: favorites may save energy before an important match or field a reserve squad.

Schedule and Fatigue

If a team plays three matches in a week or made a long flight, it affects physical condition. Squad rotation in such cases is expected. Check the team's schedule before betting.

Weather and Pitch Condition

Heavy rain, snow, wind, or heat affect playing style and the number of goals. On a wet pitch there are fewer accurate passes, more defensive and goalkeeper errors. Teams with a technical style may lose to more physically powerful opponents.

Payout Calculation Example

Suppose you bet 500 hryvnias on a team to win at 1.80 odds. If the bet wins, you receive 500 × 1.80 = 900 hryvnias (including your 500 hryvnia stake). Net profit is 400 hryvnias.

If you place an accumulator (combined bet on multiple events), the odds are multiplied. For example, two bets with odds of 1.80 and 2.00 give a total odds of 1.80 × 2.00 = 3.60. A 500 hryvnia bet returns 1,800 hryvnias if both events win. If at least one event loses, the entire bet is lost.

Beginner Mistakes

Multi-Event Accumulators

The more events in an accumulator, the higher the final odds, but winning probability drops. A five-event accumulator with 70% probability for each has an overall probability of about 17%. Two- or three-event accumulators are safer than long chains.

Chasing Losses

Trying to recover a loss by doubling your stake after each defeat. This strategy is dangerous: a series of several failures will quickly destroy your bankroll. Chasing losses is a sign of losing control, not a mathematical advantage.

Betting on Your Favorite Team

Emotional attachment prevents objective assessment of chances. If you support a team, refrain from betting on their matches or limit the amount to a symbolic one.

Ignoring Settlement Rules

Different bookmakers may settle identical markets differently: whether extra time counts, how a disallowed goal is handled, what happens if a match is postponed. Read the specific operator's rules before betting.

Legality of Betting in Ukraine

The gambling market in Ukraine was legalized by Law No. 768-IX of July 14, 2020. Since April 1, 2025, the regulatory functions are performed by the State Agency of Ukraine "PlayCity," which maintains a public register of licensees. Only operators listed in this register can legally operate in Ukraine. Licensed bookmakers must accept bets only from persons over 21 years old with full identification, process transactions through bank accounts, and comply with responsible gambling requirements.

All foreign bookmakers from the site's ranking — SpinBetter, Pinnacle, Slotoro, and Unibet — do not have a PlayCity license and are considered unlicensed in Ukraine. Their websites are subject to blocking, and players receive no protection from the Ukrainian regulator. According to PlayCity (July 2026), the agency has blocked over 9,500 illegal sites and mirrors. In case of a dispute with an unlicensed operator, you will not receive protection from the Ukrainian regulator. Winnings from a licensed operator are subject to personal income tax at 18% and military levy at 5% — a total of 23%; the operator withholds the tax, so separate income declaration is not required. In case of winnings from a foreign operator, the obligation to declare income falls on the player — check details on the State Tax Service of Ukraine website.

Responsible Gambling

Participation in gambling, including sports betting, is permitted only for persons aged 21 and over. Betting is entertainment, not a way to earn money. Set a monthly budget you can spend without affecting everyday expenses, and don't exceed it. Take breaks, don't play every day. If you feel you're losing control, use self-limitation tools: PlayCity licensed operators must provide spending limits and mandatory breaks from play. You can also submit a self-exclusion application on the PlayCity website — the restriction lasts from 6 months to 3 years and cannot be revoked early.

Never gamble on credit, don't borrow money for betting, and don't try to recover losses by increasing your stake. If betting begins to interfere with work, study, or relationships with loved ones — this is a signal to seek help.
