How live betting differs from pre-match
In pre-match betting you place your bet hours or days before the event starts, and the odds are locked in at the moment you confirm the wager. In live betting the situation changes as the match unfolds: a goal scored, a red card, a player injury — all of it instantly affects the line. The bookmaker recalculates probabilities in real time, odds update every few seconds, sometimes more often.
The live line is usually narrower than pre-match: core markets — match winner, total, handicap — remain available, but exotic markets like exact score or individual player stats may be unavailable or closed after a certain point.
Why a bet may be rejected or recalculated
The bookmaker suspends betting at key moments: a corner kick, a free kick, a one-on-one breakaway, the start of a rally in tennis. A message appears on screen: "market suspended" or "bets temporarily not accepted." This is standard practice: the operator waits for the outcome of the episode, then reopens the line with new odds.
Even if you managed to press the button before the suspension, the bet may be rejected with a note "odds changed" or "bet not accepted." In that case the funds are returned to your account and you can try again, but at the new price. Settlement rules vary between bookmakers — read the rules section on the operator's site.
Broadcast delay is another factor. The video stream in the app or on the bookmaker's site may lag behind real time by 10–30 seconds. What you see on screen has already happened, and the odds changed before the picture reached you. Experienced bettors account for this delay and don't rely solely on the stream.
Cashout: early settlement of a bet
Cashout is a feature that lets you close a bet before the event ends and collect part of the winnings (or recover part of your stake if the bet is going badly). The bookmaker calculates the current value of your bet based on live odds and offers to buy it out right now.
The cashout amount is almost always less than the potential payout, because it includes the bookmaker's margin. For example, you bet 1,000 hryvnias on a team to win at 3.00 odds — potential payout 3,000 hryvnias. By halftime your team is leading 2:0, the odds have dropped to 1.30, and the bookmaker offers cashout at 1,800 hryvnias. You can take that money now or wait until the end of the match and collect the full 3,000 hryvnias if the result holds. If the opponent comes back, the bet loses entirely.
Cashout is useful when you want to lock in profit or minimize loss, but frequent use of this feature reduces overall profitability due to the built-in margin. Not all bookmakers offer cashout on all bet types — check availability in the betslip.
Which sports are especially popular for live betting
Football is the largest live betting market. A match lasts 90 minutes plus stoppage time, events happen frequently: corners, fouls, substitutions, goals. Bookmakers offer dozens of markets in each half: next goal, total corners, yellow cards, exact score.
Tennis is the second most popular. The score changes after every rally, odds adjust instantly. You can bet on the outcome of a game, set, match, or exact set score. The line suspends during each rally, but between them the betting window opens for a few seconds.
Basketball, volleyball, hockey — sports with high dynamics and frequent score changes. The line updates quickly, markets close and reopen as the game progresses. Esports (Dota 2, CS:GO, League of Legends) is gaining popularity: matches are streamed online, in-game events are visible to viewers almost in real time, delay is minimal.
Common mistakes in live betting
Impulsive bets are the main problem. You see your favorite team concede a goal, the odds on their win go up, and you want to bet right now. Emotions take over and the bet is placed without analysis: team fatigue, second-half statistics, opponent's motivation — all of it is ignored.
Chasing losses — trying to recover a loss by increasing the size of the next bet. In live betting this is especially dangerous: events unfold quickly, decisions are made on emotion, bankroll melts in minutes. No strategy guarantees recovery of lost funds, and chasing almost always ends in total loss.
Don't chase every odds movement. If the market is suspended or the bet is rejected, that's not a signal to bet more — it's a reason to stop and think whether you should continue.
Legality of betting in Ukraine
Law No. 768-IX of July 14, 2020 legalized the gambling market in Ukraine, including online sports betting. Since April 1, 2025, the main provisions of Law No. 4116-IX are in effect, transferring regulatory functions to the newly created State Agency of Ukraine "PlayCity," under the Ministry of Digital Transformation. PlayCity maintains a public registry of licensees — only operators listed in this registry can legally operate in Ukraine. According to the head of PlayCity (July 2026), the agency has blocked more than 9,500 unlicensed sites and mirrors.
All four bookmakers in the ranking — SpinBetter, Pinnacle, Slotoro and Unibet — do not hold a PlayCity license and are considered unlicensed in Ukraine. Their sites are subject to blocking, and players receive no protection from the Ukrainian regulator. In case of a dispute with an unlicensed operator, the effectiveness of offshore regulators (Curaçao, Anjouan) is lower compared to EU regulators. The Malta Gaming Authority is considered a stricter regulator, but access to sites with a Maltese license may be restricted for players from Ukraine at the operator's own discretion. Unibet's availability to players from Ukraine should be verified independently.
Responsible gaming
Participation in gambling is permitted for persons aged 21 and older. Live betting requires quick decisions, and it's precisely in those moments that it's easy to lose control. Set a budget before you start — an amount you can afford to spend without affecting everyday expenses. Don't increase your stake after a loss, don't gamble on credit, don't try to chase losses.
The law requires licensed operators to implement responsible gaming tools: spending limits, mandatory breaks, prohibition of credit betting. Players have access to a registry of persons restricted from participating in gambling: a self-exclusion application can be submitted on the PlayCity website (with a qualified electronic signature) or in person, for a period of 6 months to 3 years. No medical diagnosis is required, and the application cannot be withdrawn early. If you feel you're losing control over your betting, use self-exclusion tools or take a break.
