Online casino bonuses: a guide for players from Ukraine

A bonus is extra funds or free spins that a casino credits in exchange for meeting certain conditions. It sounds appealing, but the whole point is hidden in the small print: the wager, the maximum bet while a bonus is active, the wagering deadline, game contribution. On top of that, Ukraine has something most countries do not: the law has directly banned some promotions that are standard in gambling, and tax is withheld from winnings. So what looks like a "100% gift" can turn out to be either genuinely worthwhile or completely pointless. Let's go through it step by step.

This material is informational and educational in nature. Gambling in Ukraine is permitted from the age of 21 and only on sites holding a PlayCity licence.

Before moving on to the types of bonuses, you need to get to grips with the terminology. Casinos use specific words that look intimidating at first but actually describe very simple things.

Wager (wagering requirement)

The wager is a multiplier showing how many times you have to turn over the bonus amount before winnings can be withdrawn. It is written as x20, x40, x50.

A simple example: you received a bonus of 2 000 UAH with a x30 wager. That means you need to place a total of 60 000 UAH in bets before withdrawal. It does not mean you will spend 60 000 — what counts is the total turnover of bets, not your losses. But the higher the wager, the lower the chance of reaching a payout without burning through the bonus completely.

A wager below x25 is considered moderate. Above x50 the terms are frankly tough. Check separately what the turnover is calculated from: some operators multiply not just the bonus, but the "deposit + bonus" sum. x20 on (1 000 deposit + 1 000 bonus) means 40 000 in turnover instead of 20 000. The difference is twofold, while the wording in the terms differs by a couple of words.

Game contribution to the wagering requirement

Not all games count equally. Slots usually contribute 100%: you bet 100 UAH and 100 UAH is credited. Table games and live casino count for 10–20%, and sometimes do not count at all. Video poker and games with a low house edge are often excluded entirely.

The practical conclusion: if you prefer roulette or blackjack, clearing a bonus on standard terms will be five to ten times harder than it looks at first glance.

Maximum bet while a bonus is active

Until the bonus is cleared, a bet limit per spin applies — typically from 20 to 100 UAH. Exceed it even once and the operator has the right to void the bonus along with all the winnings from it. This is one of the harshest conditions: an accidental tap on "max bet" can wipe out several hours of wagering.

Bonus validity period

Every bonus has a deadline — from 24 hours to 30 days, 7–14 on average. Once it expires, the bonus and the winnings from it are forfeited automatically. Check the period before activating, especially if you know the coming week will be busy.

Maximum win from a bonus

Many casinos cap the amount you can withdraw after clearing the wagering requirement. For instance, a "maximum win of x5 the bonus amount" with a 2 000 UAH bonus means a ceiling of 10 000 UAH. Even if your balance shows 80 000, you will take out 10 000. The condition is fair, but you need to know about it in advance.

Types of bonuses: what is allowed in Ukraine

Why free bonuses disappeared

Let's start with what you will no longer see at a licensed operator. Law No. 4116-IX, which came into force in April 2025, banned the offering of free bonuses. That covers no-deposit bonuses, free spins for registration, gifts for verification or for installing an app, "wheel of fortune" features and similar mechanics that do not require funding an account.

The legislator's logic is clear: the "play with no investment" format created the illusion of easy money and drew in people who know nothing about the risks yet. So now it works as a legality test: if a site promises you 100 free spins just for signing up, it either has no Ukrainian licence or is breaching its terms. Either way, that is a reason to close the tab, not to celebrate a gift.

Welcome bonus on the first deposit

The most common format: the casino tops up your first deposit by a certain percentage. The classic is 100% up to a fixed amount. Some operators offer a package across several deposits, but with a lower percentage on the second and third.

What to look at:

  • Wager: x25–35 is normal, x50 and above is a warning sign.
  • What the turnover is calculated from: the bonus alone or the bonus together with the deposit.
  • The minimum deposit required for activation.
  • The maximum win from the bonus.

A tip: do not chase the maximum amount. If a site offers 100% up to 30 000 UAH, that is no reason to deposit 30 000. Deposit exactly as much as you are prepared to spend on entertainment, and take the bonus on that amount.

Free spins as part of a deposit bonus

Free spins are complimentary rounds in a specific slot at a fixed bet. As a standalone gift for registration they are now outlawed, but as part of a deposit promotion they still appear.

Three things you need to know about them:

  1. The bet per spin is fixed. If the free spins run at 4 UAH, 50 rounds means 200 UAH of initial turnover. The win can be larger, but base your thinking on the real figures, not on the attractive "50 free spins" number.
  2. Winnings from free spins are bonus money. The wager applies to them too. Win 1 000 UAH with a x30 wager and you need to turn over 30 000 UAH before withdrawal.
  3. There is usually only one slot. Free spins are tied to a specific release. If you do not like the game or its volatility does not suit your style, the value of the promotion drops.

Cashback

Cashback is the return of part of your losses over a period: a day, a week, a month. Usually from 5 to 20% of the net loss, that is, the difference between your bets and your winnings.

This is probably the fairest type of promotion, because it only works when you are genuinely down. The pitfalls:

  • Cashback may be credited as a bonus with a wager rather than as real money. The difference is fundamental.
  • The calculation period starts and ends at a moment that suits the operator, not you.
  • The minimum loss required for a payout is sometimes set very high.

Cashback in real funds with no wagering requirement is rare and genuinely valuable. If you see such an offer, it is a solid plus for the site.

Tournaments and leaderboards

Casinos regularly run tournaments where players compete for a place in the table. The criteria vary: the biggest win, the highest multiplier, the largest turnover. The prize pool is split among the leaders.

Tournaments are interesting for those who were going to play anyway — the prize becomes a pleasant extra. Deliberately raising your bets for the sake of a line in the table is a bad idea: turnover grows fast and the prize goes to a handful of people. Pay attention to the time results are finalised as well: Ukrainian operators state it in Kyiv time, which is worth double-checking if you are abroad.

Loyalty programme and VIP statuses

Most casinos award points for every real-money bet. Accumulated points are exchanged for bonus funds, free spins or real money, depending on the rules. As points grow, your status rises: higher cashback, a personal manager, faster payouts.

An important point: the points exchange rate is almost always unfavourable. That is no reason to skip the programme, but building a strategy around it is definitely not worth it.

Reload bonuses and weekly promotions

A reload is a bonus on a repeat deposit, usually with a lower percentage than the welcome offer. Weekly and monthly promotions work on the same logic: deposit on a certain day and get a bonus.

Such offers keep active players engaged. Their terms are usually neither better nor worse than the welcome package — look at the same parameters: wager, validity period, bet limit, win ceiling.

The 23% tax: the number everyone forgets

Here is what you will not find in any bonus calculation on a casino website. A licensed operator withholds 23% from every paid-out win — 18% personal income tax and 5% military levy. You do not declare anything yourself, the money arrives already "clean", but your maths should factor this in from the start.

An example. You have met the wagering requirement on a bonus and withdraw 10,000 UAH — 7,700 UAH lands on your card. So the phrase "5,000 UAH bonus" means at most around 3,850 UAH in real money, and only in a scenario where you reached the payout stage at all. Keep this correction in mind when comparing promotions: it is the same for every legal site, but it changes how those attractive numbers look.

How to judge whether a bonus is worth it

There is no universally "good bonus" — it all depends on your playing style, favourite games and budget. But there is a simple checklist that helps you make an informed decision.

Checklist before activation

  1. What is the wager and on what amount? Multiply it out and look at the result. Is that realistic for your budget?
  2. What is the deadline? If you play once a week, a three-day deadline makes the terms impossible to meet.
  3. Which games count? Make sure your favourites are on the list with full contribution.
  4. What is the bet limit? Memorise the number and tie it to a specific slot — that is your maximum while wagering.
  5. Is there a win cap? If there is, you know your maximum in advance.
  6. How is the bonus activated? A promo code goes in before the deposit; afterwards it is too late.
  7. Does the wagering requirement fit within your limits? A licensed operator makes you set spending and time limits before your first bet. If the required turnover does not fit inside them, the bonus simply is not for you.

When it is better to decline a bonus

Sometimes playing without a bonus is the right call. Your own money carries no wagering requirement and can be withdrawn at any time without restrictions. If you plan a small deposit and want to try withdrawing your first win, a bonus will only tie your hands. Decline it at registration or simply do not activate it.

Common mistakes with bonuses

Not reading the terms before activating

The most frequent mistake is clicking "Claim" without opening the rules. Promotion terms are a contract. Signing it blind means agreeing to everything, including a x60 wager and a 20 UAH bet limit.

Confusing the bonus and real balance

On most sites you have two wallets. One is spent first, then the other, depending on the rules. Some casinos let you choose the order. Understanding which balance your bets come from is the foundation of keeping control of your money.

Exceeding the bet limit

Bet above the allowed amount once and the entire wagering progress can be wiped out. Set yourself a reminder: a sticky note on the monitor, a note on your phone, anything. The mistake is trivial, widespread and very costly.

Chasing promotions without a system

Registering on ten sites for the promotions, moving small amounts around in search of better terms — logical on paper, but in practice it scatters your budget and increases your total losses. One or two legal sites you know well work better.

Believing in "gifts" from illegal sites

Offshore sites are the loudest about no-deposit bonuses right now, precisely because the law does not apply to them. Except that along with the "gift" you get an operator you have no way of reaching if they refuse to pay. The price of such a bonus becomes clear at exactly the moment you try to collect your win.

Treating a bonus as guaranteed earnings

The house's mathematical edge does not disappear because a promotion exists. Over the long run the casino is in profit — that is the basis of the business model. A bonus extends your play and slightly lowers the risk at the start, but it does not turn gambling into a source of income.

Bonuses and responsible gambling

Bonuses are designed to keep a player on the site longer. That is a normal business interest. But you should have one of your own: not losing more than you planned.

  • Spending and time limits are set before your first bet — at a licensed casino play simply will not start without them. Set realistic figures, not maximum ones.
  • Decide your budget before entering the game, not during it.
  • Do not treat wagering as an obligation: if you are tired or have lost interest, stop. The bonus will expire, and that is better than playing out of a sense of duty to the promotion's terms.
  • Remember that an operator has no right to encourage you to keep playing after a loss — that is directly prohibited by the principles of responsible gambling.
  • If gambling has stopped being entertainment, submit a self-restriction request.

Frequently asked questions about bonuses

What is a wager in simple terms?

It is the number of times you have to turn over the bonus amount in bets before the winnings become available for withdrawal. A x30 wager on a 1,000 UAH bonus means 30,000 UAH in total bets.

Why are there no no-deposit bonuses at Ukrainian casinos?

They were banned by law No. 4116-IX from April 2025, along with other free incentives. If a site offers a bonus just for registering, that is a sign of an illegal operator.

Can you decline a bonus after receiving it?

On most sites yes, through the "Bonuses" section in your account. When you decline, the bonus is cancelled along with any winnings from it. If the bonus has not been activated yet, simply do not click "Claim".

Is tax withheld from a win obtained thanks to a bonus?

Yes. On payout a licensed operator withholds 23% regardless of whether the win came from bonus or own funds.

What does "game contributes 10% to wagering" mean?

That a 100 UAH bet on that game counts only 10 UAH towards the wager. To clear a 1,000 UAH bonus with a x30 wager through such a game, you would need a turnover not of 30,000 but of 300,000 UAH.

Does a bonus affect a game's RTP?

No. The theoretical return percentage is set by the provider, and a bonus does not change a slot's maths. The wager, however, affects how much real money you end up with: the higher the requirements, the more variance eats away while you are wagering.

The key points in brief

Bonuses are a working tool if you understand the rules. Wager, deadline, bet limit and game contribution are the four parameters that determine the real value of any promotion; the 23% tax and the ban on free bonuses are the two Ukrainian corrections that banners do not mention. Read the terms before activating, play with amounts whose loss will not change your life, and remember: a bonus is a pleasant addition to the entertainment, not its purpose.
