Cashback bonuses at online casinos: the one bonus that is more often worth it than not
Of all the bonus mechanics, cashback is the one that looks least like marketing and most like real money. A welcome bonus inflates a balance you don’t own yet and ties it up with a wager. Cashback returns part of what has already gone. The difference is fundamental, and it is why cashback remains the only offer worth doing the maths on seriously, even for someone who never takes bonuses at all.
But the devil is in the details here too. Two casinos can both advertise “10% cashback”, and in one case that will be withdrawable hryvnia in your account on Monday morning, while in the other it will be bonus funds with a x30 wager and a three-day deadline. Let’s break down what makes up the real value of an offer.
Four parameters that decide everything
The percentage on the banner is the least important figure of them all. What you need to look at is elsewhere.
1. The calculation base
What exactly those 10% are calculated from. The options on the market are these:
- From net losses — deposits over the period minus withdrawals. The most common and the fairest option: you lost 5,000 hryvnia, you get 500.
- From the total of losses without accounting for wins — a rare and unfavourable option where winning sessions do not reduce the base.
- From betting turnover — here the percentage is always smaller (0.3–1%), because the base is dozens of times larger. Do the maths yourself: 0.5% of a turnover of 100,000 is 500 hryvnia, which is the same thing.
2. Real money or bonus funds
The key fork in the road. Cashback in real money lands on the main balance, can be withdrawn at any moment and is tied to nothing. Bonus cashback lands on the bonus account and is subject to the same rules as any other bonus: wager, bet cap, deadline, list of eligible games.
A rough estimate for your calculations: bonus cashback with a x20–x40 wager is worth valuing at about a quarter of its face value, if not less. In other words, “15% bonus cashback” is in practice closer to 3–4% in real money.
3. The period and the moment of crediting
Weekly cashback is usually credited on Monday for the previous week, monthly cashback at the start of the month. The shorter the period, the better for a player with a small bankroll: the money comes back faster and doesn’t vanish because you didn’t log in for a month.
Look separately at the validity period of the credit itself. Cashback that expires in 24 hours is designed to make you play it straight back — that is not a refund, it is a retention tool.
4. Your tier in the loyalty programme
The percentage on the homepage is almost always the maximum for the highest status. A newcomer gets the lower end: instead of the advertised “up to 20%”, a real 3–5%. Reaching the top tier takes a turnover most players will never generate, and the chase for status itself costs more than the difference in percentage points.
Why cashback is legal in Ukraine while a no-deposit bonus is not
Here it helps to understand the logic of the law. The rule adopted in April 2025 banned operators from handing players free bonuses: no-deposit credits, spins for registration, gifts for verification, the “wheel of fortune”. The logic is simple — such mechanics draw into play a person who has not yet put anything in.
Cashback works differently: it is tied to bets already placed with the player’s own money. It is not an invitation into the game but a recalculation after the fact. That is why licensed operators holding a PlayCity permit do offer cashback, and it is one of the few bonuses you will see in the legal segment.
The practical implication for your choice: if a site offers you cashback, that is normal and says nothing about its status. But if there is a no-deposit bonus banner next to it, that is a direct marker that the operator works outside Ukrainian law.
Tax: the thing the promo terms don’t mention
Gambling winnings in Ukraine are taxed at a combined rate of 23% — 18% personal income tax plus a 5% military levy. A licensed operator acts as the tax agent and withholds that amount itself, so what reaches your balance is already net.
For cashback this means something simple: when counting the benefit, work from the amount after withholding, not from the figure in the notification about the credit. And bear in mind an important point — losses do not reduce the taxable base. Tax is taken on winnings, not on the financial result for the period. So cashback returns part of a loss but does not compensate the tax paid on winning sessions.
On an illegal site there is no tax agent at all, and you have to declare the income yourself. That does not make cashback there more profitable — it just shifts the work onto you.
How to calculate the real value in a minute
Let’s take two typical offers and compare them.
Casino A: 5% cashback on net losses, in real money, weekly, with no wager. You lost 4,000 hryvnia over the week. The return: 200 hryvnia, available for withdrawal immediately. Real value — 200 hryvnia.
Casino B: 20% cashback on net losses, in bonus funds, x30 wager, 5-day deadline. The same 4,000 loss. The credit: 800 hryvnia of bonus that has to be turned over 24,000 hryvnia within five days. Factoring in that over 24,000 of turnover the slot maths will cost you another 700–900 hryvnia, and that far from everyone will finish the wagering requirement in time, the real value of such an offer is around 150–200 hryvnia. In other words, no better than casino A, despite a percentage four times higher.
A rule that works: multiply the face value of bonus cashback by 0.25 and compare the result with cashback in real money. If the bonus one still wins after that multiplication, it is worth taking.
Where cashback genuinely makes sense
The mechanic gives the most to those who play regularly with small stakes: over a month enough turnover accumulates, and the return comes out meaningful relative to the budget. For a one-off player who dropped in for a single evening, cashback gives almost nothing — the base doesn’t have time to build up.
Another scenario where cashback is objectively better than a deposit bonus is play with large amounts. A deposit bonus almost always has a cap in absolute hryvnia, so on a large deposit its relative weight falls to single-digit percentages. Cashback, on the other hand, is calculated as a percentage of your real turnover and often has no such cap, or a much higher one.
Five points worth checking before you count on cashback
- Whether the section you play in is included in the base. Live tables and crash games are often excluded or counted only partially.
- Whether a withdrawal inside the period zeroes the base — with some operators it does.
- Whether there is a minimum credit amount: cashback of 40 hryvnia may simply never be credited.
- Whether cashback is cancelled if another bonus was active during the period. This is a common restriction that people find out about after the fact.
- Whether there is a cap on the credit per period, and what it is in absolute figures.
Cashback and responsible gaming
There is a trap here worth stating plainly. Cashback psychologically softens a loss and makes it feel less real — and that is exactly what its retention function is built on. The thought “never mind, they’ll give ten percent back” is precisely the kind of thinking that leads to bigger bets and longer sessions.
The sober view is simple: 10% cashback means you are losing 90% of what you lost, not earning 10%. It does not change the maths of a game in which the edge is always with the house, and it is not a reason to play more.
Licensed operators in Ukraine are required to have the player set spending and time limits, and the state register of persons with restricted access lets you close off access to every legal site at once with a single decision. That works regardless of how much cashback you are promised.
The key points in brief
Cashback is the fairest of the bonus mechanics, because it returns part of what has already been spent instead of painting in a virtual balance. But its real value is determined by four things: the calculation base, the format (real money or bonus funds), the period, and your tier in the loyalty programme. The percentage on the banner tells you almost nothing.
Two more points matter for Ukraine: cashback is legal and licensed operators do offer it, unlike no-deposit bonuses, and the 23% tax on winnings is taken off the amount before you ever see it on your balance. Count the benefit in hryvnia after withholding — and treat cashback as a discount on entertainment, not as income.
