What is SEPA

SEPA (Single Euro Payments Area) brings together banks in the European Union, the United Kingdom, Switzerland, Norway, Iceland and several other European countries into a common payment area. Transfers within the system follow the same standards and are processed as domestic payments, without being flagged as international transfers. It works only with euros.

Casinos accept SEPA through payment providers that generate the transfer details. You send the money via online banking, entering the recipient's IBAN and the payment reference. Withdrawals go the same way, to your euro bank account.

How SEPA deposits and withdrawals work

For a deposit, the casino shows you the IBAN and payment details. You log in to mobile or online banking, create a transfer to the specified account and enter the code or reference the system uses to identify your payment. The money goes through the bank and the payment processor, and the funds appear in your account after verification.

For a withdrawal, you enter your IBAN and the casino initiates the transfer. Your bank receives the euros and credits them to your account. If your account is in a different currency, the bank converts the funds at its own rate and may charge a currency exchange fee.

Pros and cons

Pros

  • Direct transfer from your account without intermediaries or e-wallets
  • Suitable for large amounts that card processors don't always accept
  • No registration with third-party services needed, just a bank account
  • A single standard for all of Europe that works with any bank in the SEPA zone

Cons

  • Processing times depend on the transfer type and on processing by the bank and the casino, so check timing with the operator
  • Details must be entered manually, making it easy to make a mistake in the IBAN or reference
  • Your bank sees the payment recipient, so privacy is lower than with e-wallets
  • If your account isn't in euros, the bank converts with a markup

FAQ

Can I use SEPA if my account isn't in euros?

Yes, but the bank will convert the currency at its own rate, and you'll receive less because of the exchange rate spread and any conversion fee. A euro account is the cheaper option.

Do I need to open a separate account for the casino?

No, you use your regular bank account with an IBAN. A separate account isn't required, though some players prefer one to keep track of spending.

Why does the casino ask for a payment reference?

The code or reference helps the payment processor automatically match the transfer to your gaming account. Without it, the operator has to find the payment manually, which delays crediting.
