Ukrainian bank cards and online casinos: why the payment route decides everything
The question «will my card go through» most often comes down not to the balance or the payment system, but to the authorisation route — the path a request takes from the cashier to your bank. Many people have several cards in their wallet, and those cards behave differently: one goes through without a hitch, another is declined with no explanation. Let's break down this mechanism, because it explains most of the declines that players perceive as a failure of the site.
This material is informational, intended for persons aged 21 and over, and contains no recommendations on circumventing bank restrictions.
The rules in brief
Legal online casinos in Ukraine operate under a PlayCity licence and settle with players exclusively in hryvnia through bank accounts. Identification is done via Diia or BankID before the first bet, and the payout goes to the same payment instrument you deposited with. So a card here is not just a convenience but part of the legal structure: it ties the money to a specific person.
Two authorisation routes
Domestic
Cards of the national payment system PROSTIR are designed for settlements inside the country. They work perfectly in shops, ATMs and Ukrainian services, but their route is not intended for international internet acquiring. If a site's cashier works through an international gateway, such a card simply has nowhere to route the request — and the decline comes not because the bank «did not allow» it, but because the transaction cannot be processed along that path.
International
Visa and Mastercard cards have a route beyond the domestic system, and the request reaches the issuer. From there the issuer makes the decision: based on the transaction category code, the product settings and your tariff. So the technical possibility appears, but it does not turn into a guarantee.
How to tell which card you have
The payment system logo on the plastic is the first sign, but not a conclusive one. It is more reliable to look in your banking app: it shows the card type and whether internet transactions are available. For many products this option is disabled by default, and on salary and social cards it may be unavailable altogether.
What else causes a decline
- Credit funds. Gambling transactions funded by a credit limit, a credit card or instalments are blocked by banks. The most common reason people do not suspect.
- Internet payments disabled. A typical default setting, especially on cards issued as part of a salary programme.
- Tariffs and category-based restrictions. Some banks price gambling transactions separately or limit their number.
- Limits. Per-transaction, daily and monthly — three different restrictions.
- Anti-fraud. An atypical transaction or a series of declined attempts in a row leads to a temporary block on online payments.
Currency: why it is simpler here than elsewhere
Players in most countries have to factor in conversion losses. In Ukraine that layer does not exist: legal casinos keep accounts in hryvnia, your card is also in hryvnia, and no conversion takes place at all. There is one exception — if you pay with a foreign-currency card: then the bank will convert the amount at its own rate, and on withdrawal it will do so again in the opposite direction.
And if a site offers you a choice of account currency — dollars, euros or cryptocurrency — that is not about convenience: the law permits settlements only in monetary form through a bank, so you are looking at a site without a Ukrainian licence.
Withdrawals
A closed-loop rule applies: money comes back through the same instrument it was paid in with. The cardholder's name must match the details in the profile — a withdrawal to the card of a husband, wife or relative is rejected, and that is a financial monitoring requirement, not the policy of a particular casino.
The timing consists of the operator's internal processing and the banking cycle: together, from a few minutes to one to three banking days. 23% tax is withheld from the payout, and the operator remits it itself.
A separate practical point: not all cards accept incoming payments equally well. If you have reissued a card or changed banks, first add the new details to your profile and complete confirmation, and only then request a payout — otherwise the money will be on your balance but you will not be able to take it out quickly.
Security
Card details are entered only on the payment provider's page, not in the site's interface. No genuine support agent asks for a full card number and a confirmation code — such a request is itself a sign of fraud. A photo of the card showing both sides is never sent via messenger. Type the site address manually and check it character by character: phishing copies differ by a single letter in the domain and are mostly designed for a small screen.
Responsible gaming
Gambling is paid entertainment with a negative mathematical expectation, not a source of income. Use only your own money, keep gaming funds on a separate card and apart from your living money, set spending and time limits before you start playing, and do not try to chase losses. If playing has stopped being a choice — debts have appeared or you want to hide your spending from those close to you — file a self-restriction application, which applies to all licensed sites at once, and consult a specialist. Participation in gambling can cause gambling addiction. Follow the rules (principles) of responsible gaming. 21+.
Frequently asked questions
Why does my card work in shops but not in a casino cashier?
Most likely it has a domestic authorisation route, internet payments are disabled, or credit funds are linked to it. You can check this in your banking app.
Can I pay with a PROSTIR card?
These cards are designed for settlements inside the country, and their route is not intended for international internet acquiring. Whether payment is possible depends on how a particular operator's cashier is set up — check with support.
What does a decline with no reason given mean?
The issuer is not obliged to disclose the grounds. Typical reasons: credit funds, disabled online payments, a limit or an anti-fraud trigger.
Will trying again help?
No. A series of declined transactions in a row heightens anti-fraud scrutiny and can lead to a temporary block on internet payments.
Can I deposit from one card and withdraw to another?
As a rule, no: the rule of returning funds through the same instrument applies. A new card has to be added to your profile and confirmed.
