Account currency at an online casino: what a player from Ukraine should choose

In short: in Ukraine the currency question is simpler to settle than in most countries. Licensed casinos with a PlayCity licence keep accounts in hryvnia, so if you pay with a hryvnia card there are no conversions at all. The complications start when foreign currency cards, cards from foreign banks or offshore sites with dollars and crypto come into play. The rule is simple: the shorter the path from your card to your gaming balance, the less money is lost along the way.

This material is informational in nature and intended for persons aged 21 and over.

Hryvnia (UAH): the basis of the legal market

For a player in Ukraine the hryvnia is the obvious choice: salary in hryvnia, card in hryvnia, deposits and withdrawals without any conversions. And importantly, on the legal market this is not just a convenient option but the standard: operators with a Ukrainian licence work with the hryvnia and Ukrainian bank accounts.

What is still worth checking even here: the minimum deposit and withdrawal amounts, and the currency in which bonus terms are stated. Sometimes tournament prizes or provider jackpots are given in dollars and converted at the rate on the date of crediting — in that case the actual amount in hryvnia may differ slightly from what you saw in the announcement.

Dollar and euro: when they do show up

The first scenario is a foreign currency card. Many people keep savings in dollars or euros and have a separate card for them. If you pay with such a card at a hryvnia casino, the bank converts the amount itself at its own card rate. And on withdrawal the win arrives in hryvnia on the card you specify — and if you want to move it back into dollars, there is another conversion. Two gaps between the buy and sell rates: that is your hidden fee.

The second scenario is offshore sites with accounts in USD or EUR. They attract players with "international" bonuses, but for Ukraine this is the illegal segment: no protection from the regulator, and the conversion is done by the operator at its own rate, which is almost always worse than the market one.

Zloty, euro and cards from foreign banks: the case for those abroad

Millions of Ukrainians currently live in Poland, Germany and other countries and pay with local cards. There are two problems here. First, conversion: zloty or euros are turned into hryvnia at a foreign bank's rate, often not the most favourable one. Second, licensed Ukrainian operators are geared towards cards from Ukrainian banks and identification via Diia or BankID, so a foreign card may simply not go through. Before registering, check at the cashier which cards are accepted. If you still have a card from a Ukrainian bank, in most cases it is better to play with that one.

USDT and other cryptocurrency

Stablecoins are pegged to the dollar, so a USDT balance does not "jump", and on the TRC-20 network transfers cost pennies. That is exactly what made crypto popular on offshore sites. In Ukraine, however, the law allows settlements with players only in monetary form through bank accounts. In other words, a casino that accepts USDT is by definition operating outside the Ukrainian licence, and the regulator directly names crypto payments as a sign of an illegal resource.

Bitcoin and Ether add exchange rate risk on top: while the money sits in the account or goes through checks, the rate can move in any direction. And blockchain transfers are irreversible — a mistake in the address or network means losing the funds with no chance of getting them back.

Where the money actually goes

  1. The bank's exchange rate when paying with a foreign currency or foreign card — the gap between buying and selling in each direction.
  2. Bank fees on transactions with a gambling code: some banks charge a commission or limit the number of such payments.
  3. The site's internal rate, if the account is not in hryvnia: the operator does the converting, and not in your favour.
  4. Tax on winnings — 23% is withheld on payout. This is not about currency, but it is exactly why the amount on your card is less than the figure on your balance.

For a player with a hryvnia card at a licensed casino, the first and third points simply disappear. For someone playing with a foreign currency card at an offshore site, a full "deposit — withdrawal" cycle can eat up several per cent before the first bet.

How to choose: the order of actions

  1. Start not with the site but with the card: decide which one you will pay with, and ideally it should be in hryvnia and from a Ukrainian bank.
  2. Check the operator's licence in the PlayCity register — at a licensed casino the currency question is settled by the hryvnia.
  3. Look at your bank's fees for gambling transactions: commissions and limits differ.
  4. Check the minimum deposit and withdrawal amounts and which currency the bonus terms are calculated in.
  5. Withdraw to the same card you deposited from, otherwise expect additional checks.

Responsible gambling

The right currency reduces losses on fees, but it does not change the main thing: the house edge is built into the rules of every game. Play only with amounts whose loss will not hit your budget, set limits in advance, do not chase losses and do not borrow money. If you feel that gambling is getting out of control, submit a self-restriction request and consult a specialist. Participation in gambling can lead to gambling addiction. Follow the rules (principles) of responsible gambling. 21+.

Frequently asked questions

Which currency is better for a player from Ukraine?

The hryvnia, from a hryvnia card issued by a Ukrainian bank. Licensed casinos work exactly this way, and in this case there are no conversions.

Are there licensed Ukrainian casinos with dollar accounts?

The legal market is geared towards the hryvnia and Ukrainian bank accounts. An account in dollars or euros usually means an offshore site without a Ukrainian licence.

Can I play with a dollar card?

You can, if the card is from a Ukrainian bank, but the bank will convert the amount at its own rate. On withdrawal and conversion back into dollars there will be another conversion.

Can I deposit at a casino in USDT?

Not at a licensed one. The law allows only monetary settlements through a bank, so accepting cryptocurrency is a sign of an illegal site.

Why is the withdrawn amount less than the balance?

23% tax is withheld from winnings, and paying with a foreign currency or foreign card adds the bank's exchange rate difference.

I am abroad. Can I play with a card from a Polish or German bank?

It depends on the operator: many licensed casinos accept only cards from Ukrainian banks. Check this at the cashier before registering.
